I like the idea of the show. I hate everything else about it. It’s annoying. It is annoying because it lacks an organic plot, character development, and overall depth and variety of characters. It also lacks good writing. I mean how many times can you recycle the same puns in the same episode or, how many times can you make references to artists and their music flopping or hitting it big to prove a point. Then there’s the characters who are shallow, but not shallow, but shallow. Or, dumb, but not dumb, but dumb. It’s almost like the writer smoked some pot, said what if I create a character who is one way, but in actuality is another way but wait, they ARE the first way… woah, mind blown 🤯. And don’t get me started on Marco figuring out he is a trans woman in the last 5 minutes of the season. I just want to say that I’ve seen better story development in TikTok’s and Insta stories in under one minute. The show is barely researched, if even and I don’t understand that with content like Pose, Heartstopper, Looking, Empire, Devil Wears Prada, 9 to 5, Working Girl, Schitts Creek, 30 Rock, Parks and Rec, Ugly Betty and many, many others, better plot development and better character diversity and development just never occurred to the show runner and writer especially when he had such an awesome idea. Marco could’ve been a lovable goof but instead, is annoying. Ben is so bland, unseasoned cream of wheat tastes better and trying to make him deep when he is so obviously obsessed with how Marco looks, is hilarious. Venetia is too flip floppy from her choice in sexuality to her work ethic and not in an interesting way. Britt is can’t decide if she’s cool or neurotic. Julia is literally useless. Parker went from the guy we were rooting for to a basic bro in 1 episode. Chad (a bit too on the nose there) went from a power hungry elitist to a dumb roid jock looking for mommy’s approval and nothing was done with any intent to that poor character. Teddy is too relaxed around his employer when that relationship could’ve done with a bit more distance and chill to make it more alluring. I don’t even know what Mykynnleigh is. The only two interesting characters are firstly Madolyn, who they keep saying is a gurl boss and pushed the envelope but is somehow turned into a block of ice left in the sun every episode and the next is Dizmal who somehow, actually managed to stay interesting the entire season. The whole thing reads like an early 2000s independent gay romantic comedy produced for literally no reason other than to appeal one particular spoke in the wheel of the queer community. The show is about name dropping brand and pop icons, exploiting stereotypes whether they be looks, tribes or even bi-coastal rivalries. No one is looking for a heady drama here but romantic comedy still needs to be smart and appealing to most. 2 stars for idea and casting.
