Three points to start out with. I went to see this movie based on the scores I saw online. I would advise you to seriously question the authenticity of a lot of these reviews. Point two, the actors and camera crew did their jobs well enough. They earned the two stars an I would’ve rated this a 0 without them. Third. I walked out around the third act. So to be fair, maybe there was some magic that happened to redeem this film that I’m unaware of. But the writers dropped the ball on this movie to an epic degree. This movie is not scary. It is not suspenseful. It doesn’t evoke any sense of curiosity in what may happen. Because this movie is boring and so incredibly predictable. And while the characters are played well, they are never placed in situations that are interesting or original. Unless you’re a very young viewer, you will have seen this story in some fashion done before. Not only that, but done better. The plot isn’t a bad idea, but the execution just seems straight up lazy. I have no clue what kind of constraints the writers and director were placed under, but this needed more time to cook in the oven.

This movie is weird. The progress of the plot is uneven with almost random events happening for no discernible reason. If you like a well structured logical movie, you’re probably not going to like this one. But there is a certain charm to this movie. The atmosphere that the film creates is uncannily unnerving just by the acting and cinematography. To be fair, the plot is barely existent, but the movie will make you feel uncomfortable, which I think is what is was ping for. Probably the greatest sin is the awfully slow and confusing start to the movie.

I went in expecting a terrible movie. It wasn’t terrible. It’s very unpolished. The dialogue can be rough at times. It’s either the movie didn’t have the budget to show some of its concepts or they couldn’t figure out a good way to show them. But the result is the dialogue channels the writers thoughts instead of the character’s thoughts. It’s no fault of the actors. This is PG-13 horror. When I went, half the audience were really young. So while the borrow was a bit tame, I think it worked well for the intended audience . There are at least two extremely well done horror scenes in the movie, so the movie is very capable of creating that atmosphere when it tries. The movie is just short of 4 stars. Maybe not catch in the theatres worthy, but you could do much worse on a lazy afternoon when this movie available to rent.

The art is beautiful and the fights are a joy to see, but the dialogue and writing are cringe worthy. Except for Inosuke, not many of the characters had a strong performance. Even Tanjuro came off stale except for one scene. The movie does very little except to move the plot the tiniest bit forward. There is so much monologue it’s painful. I don’t understand why monologue and drain a perfectly good fight scene of it’s momentum. Seriously, just watch the movie on mute. Admire the sweat and blood the artists and animators put into this.

A good movie for people that enjoy bad movies. About the same level as the Evil Dead. The movie doesn't take itself seriously and you shouldn't either.
