This is a drama about a black family as they encounter 1950s Jim Crow racism. Not nearly as much Lovecraftian horror as one would anticipate. A lot more family drama, though. It is a real struggle to keep the mindset that it's supposed to be set in the 50s when background music frequently jumps to 21st century urban overtones. Heck, there is even a point in which the characters are dancing to the Jefferson's theme song. ("Beans don't burn in the kitchen, beans don't burn on the GRILL...") Not exactly the Doom that Came to Sarnath vibe in its feeling. CGI was good with a couple of let downs. Sound was all over the place (keep a hand on your remote to save your ears.)
One could easy tell there was going to be a LOT of race-baiting as one of the the leading characters was played by Jurnee Smollett (Jussee "This is M.A.G.A Country" Smollett's sister.) And there is. Sometimes it feels like there are two episodes going on where one is a sketch show of Jim Crow at its most aggressive, while the other is a group of people who just have a knack for running into mysteries where Lovecraftian names and locations are occasionally name-dropped.
Considering the names involved in production, I expected better things from a series that invoked H.P. Lovecraft.
