Here I will be dividing my review into 3 major sections as Mulan is an adapted movie from Disney's animated film back in 1998. These categories are Tweaks, Storytelling and Cinematography.
Tweaks:
#1 - Changes from Mushu and Cricket
Instead of Mushu the all time comedy relief tiny dragon, we got... a phoenix which only appears on screen to give Mulan confidence resembling her ancestors from her family line. Dang it, there goes the laughs in cinema.
Cricket is now a human instead, one of Mulan's friends in the army which delivered 2 key points on screen:
1. roll over twin arrow shots clearing path for Mulan.
2. making audience think he dead for few seconds.
#2 - Khan's eagle is a "witch" (Xianniang)
Although Xianniang did comes up with a wonderful idea so that Mulan is not isolated but there is actually a senior who went through what she is struggling with and both are convincing one another on their identity, moral compass and what could be.
#3 - Shang to General Tung
Well the main romance of the classic film between Mulan and her superior is also discarded here which is good for me as it is normal that Generals in the army are usually married men and of certain age. Unless they too can make General Tung as a prodigy of his time.
#4 - Hong Hui and Hua Xiu
Both are addition characters to this movie with one being somewhat being hardly a romantic connection to Mulan and the other being her sister. Hong Hui has to come in to keep the suspense as Mulan's love interest since General Tung is clearly out of the picture, most will figure out when he mentioned he wanted Mulan to meet his son, letting us know he is a married man with family and quite a huge age gap between the both of them. Hua Xiu in the other end doesn't impact much for the movie.
Storytelling:
#1 - Movie Flow
Mulan started off on a high note, with little Mulan already using her chi so well and the whole community drama is somewhat great. However, most of the contents are pretty much linear and not so on a high note with mediocre deliveries. I don't feel her struggles as much even though I understand as certain shots tried to establish that but they did not hit the mark. This entire content will be burnt by viewers if not for their amazing cinematography. Plus, typical Disney movie will turn anything and everything into an emotional context and engross us in them which they never fail to nail it especially towards the end.
#2 - Transitions
The cuts and transitions are very linear and one sided approach which requires some help from narrative scenes. It was very direct and the movie just go along to progress with the story without audience being excited, thinking or even have time to feel for any aspects from the movie except for the ending between Mulan and her father. Even with such wonderful casts, they hardly have time to display any important acting roles for this entire movie, especially the supporting casts seemed like they can be replaced by any less famous actors and actresses. Even Donnie Yen did not do much except for talking and do some air punches and kicks with sword spinning that are not impressing at all. Cricket's rolling back-handed arrow shots takes the "cool" award instead. Overall, the entire transition is very poor as one scene does not really build up to the other.
Cinematography:
Overall, the CGI and actions are quite cool which is what stood out for this movie. Only certain casts get to shine in this movie which seems to be the filmography and directing problem instead.
Felt they should have do much better since they have a base film as a reference and raise its benchmark.
