Superbly brooding film that tackles difficult themes. Strong performances from all the principals against a strikingly beautiful backdrop. It's not in any sense conventional, moves slowly but has enormous power. Kodi Smit-McPhee as the boy is an Aubrey Beardsley like figure pitted against the stinking self-loathing toxicity of Cumberbatch's Phil. There'll be Oscars for this.
