One of the best films I’ve watched for years. Brilliant understated acting from a great cast, poignant storytelling, funny, sad, gorgeous. Loved everything about it.

Such a clever enjoyable film. Snapshot memories of childhood and how a nine year old boy subconsciously deals with violence and conflict he doesn't quite understand and actually neither do the adults understand. Buddy's escape is the cinema, as was the case with every child of that era. Wide screen technicolor fantasy movies juxtapose with the real life black and white, and maybe I'm taking this too far, but the High Noon (black and white, therefore real life?) climax analogy is a masterstroke. Deserves every award going.

I was given this book by a friend at Christmas. I literally cannot put it down. I'm a Beatles fan and fascinated by them generally, but Ken McNab's sometimes quirky and metaphoric prose makes a difficult subject, (the wheeings and dealings, the endless names and characters, the legal stuff etc,) an absolute joy and an easy read. Excellent.
