What a huge disappointment, after loving almost everything Almodovar has done I found The Room Next Door embarrassingly bad.
So much was wrong: to begin with, its stylish, glossy treatment of cancer and assisted dying felt unbelievable and in very poor taste. The story line was very implausible, the actors didn’t seem to believe in their lines and the script was so wooden you didn’t care at all about the characters, who often jarringly voiced political positions. The audience tittered at pompous ridiculous dialogue at moments which were clearly intended to be serious.
I’m totally mystified by all the positive reviews. Very sad when the film deals with such currently important and hotly debated subject matter. I could almost see it being celebrated in the future as a classic black comedy.
I still got to the point where I couldn’t take any more and left 20 minutes before the end.
