EARLY ACCESS REVIEW: TL;DR: Amazing true-to-source D&D 5th edition game. Great writing, great characters, great combat. 30+ hours in, and all I want is more. Disclaimer: You will see a great many comparisons, sometimes negative, to Baldur's Gate 3 and Larian's previous hit title Divinity: Original Sin 2. This is because they are both turn-based combat high fantasy games based on D&D. The defining difference is with Baldur's Gate 3, they had the tools and permission to use D&D property forthright, and created a wonderfully distinct game in the process. The first thing to address, is the current state of the game functionally. I have put 30+ hours into it, and in an early access state, there have been a few bugs. Some animations do not properly initiate, some ragdoll physics will send enemy bodies flying into orbit, and you will see the occaisional anomaly in NPC scripts. Acknowledging that this game is in early access is the reason why I chose to prevent those issues to affect the rating. The setting is vibrant, the character animations in dialogue are spectacular, the voice acting is exemplary, and it's been one of the most immersive D&D games I've played. The environments are almost completely interactive in and out of combat. The game very often rewards out-of-the-box thinking much in the same way tabletop D&D does. Within my first 10 hours, there were characters I hated, characters I loved, moments of triumph, and moments of complete despair. The combat is very tactical and requires you to use all your wits sometimes. Encounters that initially seem impossible become the sweetest victories when you try different approaches. Diplomacy, stealth, or outright violence; you are given multiple methods and choices for most pivotal encounters. The world reacts and grows from your choices. Additions / Changes I would like to see in the full game: - More D&D 5E content (classes, races, backgrounds, spells, etc) - Quality of life improvements ("sell all wares" button, gear comparison tooltips when looting, etc) - MORE OF WHATS GIVEN IN EARLY ACCESS!
