I saw this movie when it was young and so was I. Decades later I was teaching in a remote Rocky Mountain community when I discovered what an icehouse was. The mood of the film was so intense that it has always remained with me. It’s in my modest collection now and I continue to appreciate the quality of the production. Robinson’s acting was always first rate.

Always gripping in a gentle way. Princess Grace a little wooden as she usually was but attractive and likeable. Murder with whimsy in the traditional British style can be captivating. He almost got away with it but he was too nasty for that kind of denouement. Still looking for the perfect murder.

I have tried to watch this film to the finish on several occasions but failed. Surely it is an over exaggeration. I have worked and lived in rural communities in Australia and North America. Life was often very basic in Anglo America and on indigenous reservations. But there was always a basic humanity. Substance abuse created major problems and Wake in Fright might be a warning. The movie was too unrelentally ugly for me. Production and acting were first rate.

The laughs spill over so quickly it leaves the mind in a tangle of knots. Acting is first rate from the ensemble and John Lithgow’s enthusiasm must be infectious. Production is meticulous. Altogether an outstanding entertainment.

Why do we do this to each other? A disturbing movie and difficult to watch. Excellent performances and today we hear that Sean Connery has died. Vale!

So Dad ‘n Dave ! Caricatures full of huff and puff. What a shame. Much too bleak to be humorous.

In 1950 I found it to be spellbinding. Today, 2020 it is something rather different.
