This 4 season series has a great idea to build from. Essentially, the show is about the last man on Earth. I thought this show would focus a lot on how this happened, and how Phil (Tandy) Miller handled his first few days living on earth alone. HOwever, the first episode has a montage of Phil travelling through the United States searching for other life and picking up a few valuable items along the way. The show essentially starts with Tandy deciding that he would live out his life in Tucson, and drink his way to his own depression and death. Just as Tandy is about to give up, he finally meets someone. And just like that, after one episode, the last man on earth, was no longer the last man of earth. Strange??
With the first episode, you start to feel for Tandy and emphasize with him. Then, when Carol is introduced you see Tandy’s true colors and the empathy I once had, turns to pity. Tandy seems to be nothing more than a man driven by the need for sex. As he meets more people, he constantly is looking for ways to engage with them sexually. And despite being the only man out of then 4 people, he is still just not appealing to anyone. This again, I think, is duly due to the fact that this once okay character reveals his sexual deviance. Even when other men are introduced, Tandy’s immediate reaction is to eliminate the other men, in order for him to have a better chance to engage sexually with the few women left.
So season one continues like this and seems to have taken a good idea, and wasted it by having the main character as some sexual deviant.
HOwever, after the first season, Tandy starts to become a decent guy and as the story continues, his goal of engaging sexually with everyone becomes less and less. He starts to appreciate Carol and he starts to engage in real relationships with the other remaining people. There are certainly some great relations and great fun moments watching Tandy grow into a decent person.
Yes, there are a few odd moments and characters that come and go. Some for just a moment, like one or two episodes. Like the Mexican cartel drug lady’s house in which the group lived for a while. And some character that came and went for a few more episodes, like Mike and Jasper.
Overall, after the first season upset, the show gets a lot better. The group becomes interesting and more relatable. I did enjoy seeing relations build during the 4 seasons.
I would be happy to see a fifth season and learn what happens to the group and the 4th season ended on a cliffhanger.
So if season 5 ever comes, get ready!
