It's fiction it's not perfect. But it's pretty close. As a young anglo I left home for LA and found work in the only job I was qualified for. Working as a short order cook in a LatinX neighborhood. Besides the store manager I was the only anglo in the kitchen. The rest of the staff were Mexicanos. I soon learned what it took to make friends, pay rent, get enough to eat and navigate in a culture where I was just as broke and just as far from home as my peers. I never fit in, but I was adopted. Family, honor, faith. It's complicated. Gentefied is pretty good at letting us see what we don't see on the commute to and from the suburbs. There's a lot of love in those places you drive by. I didn't grow up in the barrio. But for me Gentefied is like coming home.
