So, why is it that most American remakes of international movies are just not as good??? I saw the original 2011 French movie, The Intouchables, and I taught it was phenomenal! The Upside, not so much. I just didn’t buy the chemistry between the lead actors and the movie in general just felt average (funny saying this, as the movie is based on a true story). I guess it all comes down to the execution. I never felt drawn in to either side of the characters lives, Kevin as dirt poor and Bryan as the super rich. So much effort was put into trying to make the audience laugh (predictably silly and long-drawn “funny” scenes by Kevin, of course) or cry (the sad, emotional and no-so-believable scene at the birthday party). Don’t get me wrong, The Upside was good, but why did Hollywood have to go mess with a perfectly good story in the first place. Just saying!!!
