I’d give Nosferatu a steady 6.5/10
The extraordinary (in other words, aspects of the film that are a solid 10/10): Visuals, Nicholas Hoult, Willem Dafoe, Bill Skarsgatd, Music, 4 specific quotes, and (although part of the visuals) the colour grading
The good (a round 5-8/10): Makeup, costuming, gothic aesthetics, cast overall
The bad: everything else. Pacing, emotional connection to characters, lack of context, horror - this film is not really a horror to me…more a collection of good horror aesthetics and bad horror tropes. Jump scares, whatever the fuck those faces were that lily pulled…so much of this film felt very jolted. You’d be almost immersed in one moment and then completely pulled away from that by something random af. Nosferatu himself felt yes, grandiose but not threatening one bit. Bill did his very best with what the writers had given him and I think he did splendidly. But the character felt…almost goofy. As did Ellen.
In other words. Go see the movie for the visuals and a nice gothic aesthetic. But if you’re going for it as a movie? I’d advise waiting for it to come out on streaming services or dvd.
I will say however. I loved it. I wouldn’t watch it more than once every few years probably. But it was better than what I expected. And GODDAMN NICHOLAS HOULT IS TERRIFIC
