This movie wasn't awful. It's the best out of the remakes in my opinion. It's not a musical and they said it wasn't going to be. I feel like people are giving it a hard time because
1. It's behind a $30 pay wall
2. Base their judgment on the previous remakes which weren't that great either so they jump to the conclusion that this won't be either.
3. Attached to the original so tightly that they compare it to the original rather than just it's own merit of a movie.
4. Go in thinking it's a musical and when it's not get upset. Even though the director and Disney said it wasn't a musical.
5. Go into this movie already expecting to not like it and when they don't they feel validation in their dislike for it. Or go into it with too high of expectations (i.e. wanting it to be something it's not and not just seeing the vision of the film presented)
6. They listen to other people's reviews BEFORE judging it themselves.
Yeah, that $30 was too high, but Disney is a business and they gotta make money on a movie that was originally supposed to be released in theaters but now on a streaming service due to a pandemic. It's still too high of a price in my opinion. This movie is fine, if you just try to look at it with a fresh lense there are things to enjoy. Make your own judgment. Whether you like it or not, at least it's your own opinion.
That being said, Disney should really stop remaking their own movies and just make new content. The originals are widely loved for many reasons and just crudely slapping a new coat of paint on an already finished, beautiful project just disrespects the original effort of the team behind it.
TLDR: Mulan 2020 is a solid ok movie.
