I have not read the books, so I’m just reviewing based on what I see.
First, the good: Michael Dorman is just plain fun to watch. The acting in the show is also pretty good, and the story is compelling emotionally. There are plenty of characters to love and plenty more to hate. David Alan Grier, Paul Sparks, really most of the cast is great.
Now the bad: Being from Texas and a fairly regular hunter and fisherman, I can tell you that I have never seen a game warden act so weird. Game wardens are not park rangers, get it right. They’re law enforcement, and tough ones too. They have more authority than a regular cop, and are highly trained, aggressive, some of the time bullies. They can search you or your property without a warrant and come onto your place or in your house, and they will and do. Often. Since they rarely catch people, the ones who are unfortunate enough to be caught with an extra bird or a buck that’s a bit too small or with horns out of whatever regulation the county has figured, you will suffer. So to me the character Joe Pickett is not terribly believable.
Also the Scarlett’s are not believable as people either. They are scary but that type of behavior, assaulting officers and murdering and threatening will get you run right out of town and into the state penitentiary.
Finally, it’s trying really hard to make the show seem like it’s a champion for nature. I know, it’s politically in vogue, and animals ARE really cool and should be protected and the show IS a DRAMA about a game warden, but it makes the whole story seem not terribly real, at least to me. It could be a lot better I think, but I know some stories are better as books.
I imagine this story is too.
