The first episode nearly put me off from watching the rest because it seemed rather rushed. Thought the rest of the season would be the same. I'm happy to say I couldn't have been more wrong.
Although a little rushed, episode one does deserve credit for establishing the protagonist's backstory well. Supporting characters are still a little but mary-sue, but that's simply because it's still just the first season. Elements of comedy aren't forced, got a genuine chuckle out of me once or twice in every episode. Michael Sheen is, as always, phenomenal. They've taken an interesting approach by somewhat humanising a serial killer, makes the story all the more unsettling for the viewer.
Each episode is better than the last. The show's definitely still finding itself, but it's promising and I'm excited to see what lies in store.
Oh, and the acting! Tom Payne is positively brilliant in this role. It isn't easy to portray mental illness in a way that doesn't come off as cheesy, frightening, or downright annoying, and yet he manages it. His performance makes it really easy to sympathise with Malcolm. Plus, the story relies heavily on showing the viewer Malcolm's perspective, so you're looking at it *through his eyes* instead of *at* him. Which makes it all the more rich and compelling.
All in all, of you're a crime show enthusiast, someone who enjoys watching already tortured characters being hurt even further, or just plain bored, I'd absolutely recommend this show. Barely 10 episodes in, and I'm hooked already.
