Before you read this review, here is my standing in the franchise. My first FE game was Three Houses, but I went to play the GBA titles (Binding Blade, Blazing Sword, and Sacred Stones) after I finished all the routes. I then played Awakening, then all of Fates, then Geneology of the Holy War and Thracia 776, then Mystery of the Emblem (NES), then Echoes, then Path of Radience and Radiant Dawn. I still haven't played the Third Title. I want to share this so you know that I enjoy this series for its Characters and Gameplay, with story being a big thing as well, but if the former 2 are great independently, I can ignore the story in criticisms. Not in this ranking system, but yeah.
Engage my second least favorite title, with only Revelations being behind it. It's not even close for 3rd least favorite, being Birthright. I get bored out of my mind when listening to the plot, the characters are (for the most part) boring and one note, like Fate's cast, and the gameplay is some of the worst I have ever seen in this franchise. The Emblems are objectively not a good addition and I personally don't like the class system of all these class types aside from Infantry, Armored, Riding, and Flying (, and Laguz in Tellius). Some are fine, like Qi Adept, but i hate Back up. Also, each map is a slog thanks to each unit only having 4 move unpromoted unless Cavalier or Flier, and 5 mov when promoted (unless your a armor, yet another case of IS making armors mid as hell). The devs designed the maps with the Emblem Skills in mind, but they forget that the good skills are temporary, only for 3 or 4 turns. Also, Maddening, thanks to this, is more stupidly designed than Three Houses later into the game. Early, it's genuinely solid, but otherwise, Maddening Mode is an awful experience, especially since your locked into fixed growths for your first playthrough, which I dislike. Makes the game overly repetitive and honestly makes units feel less distinct.
If your a parent, or someone trying to get into this franchise, do not buy this game. Instead, buy Three Houses, or find a way to play the older titles, you or your child will have a much better time with those titles.
