as a ex-foster child this book touches home, not everyone can experience the troubles of being a burden in someone's home. This novel is still one of the books I re-read hundreds of times, just because. it never gets old. the descriptions of the oleanders and the deserts, the way she depicts the mother is so realistic, like this story is true. The book is a true mind catcher. It starts slow describing the home life of the child and the way the mother wouldn't allow her to be a child, my take on things, the way Astrid would describe her mothers scent, her beauty. This book is a good read for anyone. This artist depicts the Santa Anas so well its captivating. the emotion the crime, the lust, it is all in one book, it pulls you in and before you realize it your half way through the 446 page book. the anticipation of what's this poor child going to go through next, the sympathy the irony, its all amazingly written and it can be illustrated with a creative and imaginative mind. Janet Finch truly captivates the minds of the readers, when flipping pages, I highly recommend this to anyone that likes a book that is non-fiction but is great enough to be fiction!
