If I do not do This, I would be failing in my duty as someone who loves good cinema.
'Laila Majnu' came from nowhere and hit me in the heart. Of course, there would be people who would not like the film or even give it a fair chance but if there's any movie this year that deserves a viewing, it has to be this retelling of a Persian love poem of star-crossed lovers who are destined to never meet.
We all know the story or at least its contours. But, then again, do we know it all ? Can we ever get enough of a love like that. Can a presenter/director/cinematographer weave his magic with a yarn so exquisite that all our pre-conceived theories or notions come to naught.
Laila Majnu is a film that, in fact, needs no reviewing. I mean how do you rate a movie that benumbed you with the sheer beauty of its tragedy. I am not sure if that made sense, but how can it not ? The trappings of technology have not been able to dilute our quest for love (or love on celluloid) or the mysticism that is its by-product, have they ?
The landscape of Kashmir coupled with the original soundtrack by Niladri Kumar, Joi Barua and Alif lends an air of hypnotic sublimity. And if you are wondering why the actors have still not found a mention, it is because no matter what adjectives I resort to, their talent and the freshness that they bring to this work of art would rather be experienced than told. But, yes, a special commendation for Mr. Tiwary who has spent at least a decade in oblivion - your future the film industry or the cinephiles cannot guarantee, but, that we haven't noticed you in the past is completely our loss.
