As someone who grew up with the original, who also thought Tim Burton washed up, I wasn’t expecting much. I think Burton absolutely crushed this one. Is the plot fantastic? Nah, but it’s really not the point of the movie. The use of practical makeup made me so happy, along with great costumes and actual sets. Certain bits like the Soul Train actually made my super old grandma smile ear-to-ear, and it shows that Burton is actually dedicated to growing in character as a director. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice perfectly encapsulates the campy and gothic style Burton became so famous for, while also keeping up with a new generation of pacing. We get to see SO many more places from the original. They hilariously dealt with the absence of the creep actor who played Lydia’s dad in the original. The vibes for this movie were hilarious, no scene felt like it dragged on or fell behind. It also had some sneaky jokes that talked about real issues people face in the world (like Lydia being preyed upon by her manipulative boyfriend at the widow’s support group). All capped off with a goofy and campy ending that left me feeling both satisfied and lighthearted. Great movie, if you liked the original you should like this one too!! Especially if you’re a fan of film and classic gothic camp.

Absolutely awesome show. Really artistic and hilarious if you’re into British dry and deadpan type stuff. Simultaneously it finds a way to be emotional and touching, all with suspense and pretty good subversion of expectations.

(The hate on this show is disproportionate and clearly generally made by closed-minded individuals and 13~yr olds) I am a very young adult, 18 (without kids) and I find this show to be enjoyable. Lots of people complain about it being “poor background noise” but I feel that invalidates their reviews, because it means they simply didn’t watch it. I enjoy animation and cartoons as a whole, and I gave this show an objective and unbiased watch. Apple & Onion is a very deadpan and dry show, which is probably due to the fact that it’s a British show and the humor is naturally more odd over there. If you don’t enjoy dry humor without the wacky and exaggerated delivery of American kids shows, you won’t find it funny. The plot and stories are generally focused on one mundane and simple task, which is typically blown out of proportion and then solved over the episode. This may be my only gripe with the show, as it lacks a certain level of depth I enjoy in shows. Generally, it is a good watch and has some good educational messages (A new word is often introduced in each episode, and explained. Which would be good if you have a low vocabulary or have a young kid.) So yeah, four stars because it’s not fantastic but I do consider it a good show and would watch it over plenty of other kids cartoons available.
