This is a perfect representation of love vs romance. She depicted love authentically, with genuine endearment and compassion; Whereas he depicted romance with greed and expectation. His character wasn't wrong for how he felt toward her - he wasn't silly for what he felt. The problem is, he didn't take the time to get to know her, to truly understand her, to respect her. Love is completely and utterly selfless. Did he seem selfless to you? No. Now again, I am not saying his feelings toward her weren't real or valid. I am saying that he should have slowed down. He should have taken the time to respect her pace, what she wanted (That she specified to him again and again), friendship. This film is brilliant and so very beautiful and I understood every message the writers told. I hope everyone who watches this will understand both sides, but especially Summer's. She was waiting for love. She isn't a stupid person (or character). She knew people desired her because she seemed "different". She didn't want people to view her as different, "not like other girls". She just wanted love and she was patient enough to accept true love, when it happened. He was a hopeless romantic who fell for an idea. He was not in love. That is why he was greedy and wrong for the things he said about her out of anger, because he wasn't getting what he wanted. How love became hate. That is not love. Love doesn't turn into hate. Desire, expectations, selfishness, greed, these can turn into hate. Love is completely selfless. Romance is exciting and sure it feels good with someone who wants the same, but it can't and shouldn't be demanded. Be patient with people and respect that they are their own person, they are alive for themselves, not anyone else. Take what people give with no expectations and you will live a life of bliss, instead of grievances and bitterness.
