This is a very difficult game which feels pretty unfair a lot of the time. It is difficult for me to progress in spite of playing TBS games all the time. "Normal" in this game is like "Scavenger Mode" in Solasta, which I never would have selected for a first play through of any game.
I explore everything thoroughly to pick up as much stuff as possible and upgrade weapons and mutations. I try to pick off as many stragglers before a main battle but they are still difficult. They definitely designed the game around this stealth strategy but have also gone well out of their way to make sure it really doesn't work for you very well. You will always end up in an overwhelming boss fight you barely survive after 20 attempts. I really don't call this "fun". It is more like I am getting through on trial and error than anything else. I am just replaying over and over again with slight variations to the setup of the ambush until I have a workable position.
The game might get "fun" if I manage to get though it and actually want to attempt a replay (not looking likely).
If you aren't particularly good at TBS games, don't bother playing unless you like to torture yourself. They really need an "easy" difficulty setting for the game and series to have wider appeal.
The lack of melee weapons for your team is a painfully glaring oversight that makes everything feel lopsided because the enemies sure can do melee attacks. It just feels wrong somehow.
Expect to spend more time loading saved games than actually battling. Otherwise, the story good, which is why I was generous and gave 3 stars. And that is having received the game for free. If I had to pay full price for it, I would have likely only given 2 stars.
