I first saw this movie (twice) at the Speedway (IN) theater at the age of seven when it was first released. Over the years, like Speilberg, I would say it is still probably my favorite movie.
It is the "main" P-38 movie. After seeing it again yesterday, I wondered just how many planes the USAAF let them have as most of the shots are stock footage (I would imagine.) The flying scenes at the training field were beautifully done, especially if they combined a mockup of the trainer and matched the background to stock footage. (They didn't "quite" match up the flight path with the runway...They were too far over to the left with both Johnson and DeFore at the stick.)
I still wonder who the "General" was supposed to be, as I think that one of his ribbons was "The Medal." Usually, they don't show movie characters wearing that one out of respect for the Awardees. (I looked at it as close as I could, and could be wrong as it wasn't on top and by itself.)
