Anora (2024)
This was one of those movies that wasn't playing locally at my usual theater. So as always I had to decide if I wanted to go a bit out of my way to see it. Not just in a distance sense, but going to a completely different theater brand that wasn't part of my Regal Unlimited Plan I'm on. My gut was telling me this was indeed one of those movies worth going out of the way to see ASAP. I'm glad I listened to my gut.
Established right away was the marvelous screen presence lead actress Mikey Madison has. An actress I was aware of, but overlooked over the years. Well she's absolutely on my radar now. Her performance wasn't just the best of her career, but of the year so far. The energy she brings to this role just radiants off the screen. In fact the first half of this film fits right into that energy. Giving the audience a burst of what it's like to be carefree and full of life. The music, the atmosphere, the cinematography and supporting cast plays out with a perfect balance that invites you in with welcoming tone. I felt like I was there with them having a blast. Just when you thought you couldn't have anymore fun....the second half of the film shows up.
By the halfway mark the talented storytelling does a 180 and sets the stage for an absolute blast. The acting and writing goes to another level. Giving us some of the best comedic writing and timing. Establishing a wild ride the characters find themselves going through. I was already sold on the main actress of the film. What took me by complete surprise with how many supporting actors became people I cared about and how they elevated the entire film to greatness.
By the end of this film it wears it's heart on it sleeve and captivates some magnificent character development. One that really warmed my heart. I was secretly rooting for a moment and the film delivered, capping it off perfectly.
Overall.....I'll keep it simple. This movie just earned my number one spot of best films of 2024. From start to finish I had the best time I did watching any film of this year. I can't wait to watch it again and again.
5 out of 5 stars
