Having lost my beloved daddy in January 2020, the timing of this book is prefect healing for me. Looking through a son's or daughter's lens, it's easy to believe that the lives of your parents start when we are born. It's hard to phantom your parents being human, or having a life outside of just being your parent. As an adult, one of the hardest lessons to learn is that your parents are human beings. This book was hard to put down, because you want to know more about Sonny and where he is headed in life. Although, I grew up in a different era, time and place in the United States, I can still related his thrust for knowledge, willingness to try something new, and his drive to financially support himself and his family. He lived through segregation / Jim Crow (separate but "equal"), but we continue to live with racism. To me, this book is about embracing challenges and living out your best life regardless of your shameful past. Darrell, thank you for sharing your dad with us! I know your dad is proud of you. I know that writing this book is an experience that you will never forget. I cannot wait to read your story and I wonder what the title of this book will be. Please keep me posted!
