It was never about the destination, motivation or company, lighting, drugs murder or NOLA. It's the ride man. The ride was all about the ride. Dont read too much into the movie. When I graduated from high-school three of us piled into a car and just took a ride for 11 days. An easy ride to see what we might never see again. Same as generations before and after us. I dig the movie so much then and now, for the same reason. Fonda/Hopper made it a timeless ride. Fortunately it still is.
