It was not terrible but it wasn’t great either.
A few thoughts:
1. They definitely went with a much more racially diverse cast than I expected for Victorian London. However, the acting was quite good that you don’t even really notice. If anything, it added to the appeal of this show. So, don’t get wrapped up with all the reviews from largely white folks that get bent out of shape when they see a black, latino, Asian, or Middle Eastern actor.
2. The plot was rather confusing. It wasn’t exactly clear where the story was heading. I found myself googling answers for plot questions. Not sure if it was just me, or the actual plot itself. Nonetheless, be prepared for some confusion.
3. The music, while I enjoy that type of genre, definitely clashes with the theme of this period piece. It becomes distractingly obvious when an EDM piece plays in the backdrop of a scene or two.
4. The leading actress, the one that plays Beatrice, is definitely a standout in her performance. I expect many great acting roles from her in the future.
5. I did enjoy the pronounced difference between the Sherlock/Watson dynamic here than our cliched idea of them. I would dare say it was a bit refreshingly new.
