Two stars for the hilarity!! I laughed so hard I cried. The Sopranos was beautifully thought out and even more beautifully executed on screen. "The Many Saints of Newark" is a complete mockery. The acting was subpar at best, despite the handful of incredible actors. I applaud young Gandolfini for his attempt to carry on his father's legacy in all that it means, but no..not a good fit for the role. He really is the image of his father, and that certainly tugged a bit at my heart. Young Silvio and Paulie were laughable... seriously hilarious. I ❤ 😍 💖 Vera Farmiga in everything I've seen her in but this was just too weird. The over exaggeration of the original characters took away from what could have been epic. The characters fell flat. Really, how many of us have identical mannerisms as our younger selves? We carry some things into our future, but we don't try to replicate it. This cast should have been told to relax the physical mannerisms and give us the opportunity to see how the characters developed into their future selves (Sopranos). Instead, they all attempted to replicate the physical, vocal, and overall aesthetic of the original cast. What a damn shame and an overhyped piece of rubbish. I couldn't help but be reminded of the numerous films that mocked the characters from "twilight" when it came out. This movie could be somewhat redeemed if they call it a comedy.
Also, what in hell were they thinking when they cast Ray Liotta for 2 roles. That man is a genius in mob movies, but this was just plain confusing. How awesome would it have been if they had cast Christopher Walken as the father? The direction was lazy and uncreative. The acting was hilarious... not necessarily bad if that's what they were going for. The cast was great for the most part, but the potential was unused. In fact, the potential was wasted. I did however feel a bit warm and cozy hearing Michael Imperioli's voice narrate. It would have been nice to see him in the cast, preferably as his own father.
I'm not sure what the casting directors and writers were going for but I'm going to bed tonight with the hopes that I will wake up and The Sopranos still stand alone. RIP James Gandolfini 😘❤
