Simply rivetting. I felt I was right there. Mute spectator. Helpless and awe struck at the terrible conditions of their life. You have read what poverty and displacement can do to people. Now you see. You empathize; even with the parents, the tout, the man who marries Zain's 11 year old sister. It seems each of them has a valid point of view . But it is Zain, whose hard life has made him constantly think on his feet , who walks away with the accolades. He is the adult in a child's body, torn between wanting to go to school and having to fulfill his responsibilities towards his own family.
Capharnaum is a film brilliantly made ; giving you all of the raw not once attempting to whitewash the pain and suffering that almost always goes unnoticed. It is a damning indictment of the apathy and indifference of both, our societies and governments to those groups of people marginalized and living on the periphery . Capharnaum makes you ask yourself : It's so in your face , how do we miss it ?
