My beginner students in high school upgrading have read Ooka and the Stolen Smell. The plot allows my students to compare the three characters in terms of each one's motivation for their various decisions and actions. Different ethnic groups in the class would come out with stories from their culture and literature about tales of wise judges or people and how they had influenced their communities.
