A refusal to use the rich novel extended universe crippled this effort from the start. The villain felt like a trilogy after thought and the big reveals were a yawn. Trying to use Leia felt forced and weird. Opportunities wasted in Last Jedi made too much to repair. The claim is that this is fan service, but most fans see the awkwardness and lack of thought in the story.
