If any film ever deserved to win Oscars for both best actor and best actress this was it. Unbelievable that Cate Blanchett did not get nominated along with Brad Pitt as their roles work as a duality, really like nothing else I can recall. The movie would not work the way it does without both of them. Her performance is better than most of the ones that have won for best actress.
Every other aspect of the film is breathtakingly good. Direction, writing, cinematography, makeup, all of it. Students of any aspect of film or play production would benefit from seeing it. It did win Oscars for art direction and makeup.
It would however be a good idea to be in a fairly good mood when you see it. It is unusually emotive and would very be likely to resurrect the kinds of feelings that one acquires from life-changing events.
