There's a lot to unpack within this disturbing film, which apart from the terror, touches upon many social issues (intentionally or not) that are as relevant today as they were 52 years ago. Romero comments that this was the one (and only) time where he consciously wanted to "scare" the audience...and scare he did. His later dead flicks present a more lighthearted, comic-book like atmosphere - not to be taken seriously...but this gruesome, nihilistic, nightmare-on-celluloid is a different animal altogether - the B&W production and creepy soundtrack giving it even more impact. For me, Night Of The Living Dead remains a cinematic landmark and the very definition of a "horror" movie - where the prey are trapped in a dreadful, increasingly hopeless situation, and the predators are their neighbors and society at large...
