What did I like about this movie?
The Ghost in the Shell stuff.
What I dislike?
The fact that they did not seem like they could decide what they wanted to make. Did they want to make a new interpretation of the core material or a straight live-action remake? They apparently decided to do both.
The movie is made up of 4 things: The two original animated movies, and Blade Runner rehashes, as well as their own ideas.
The end result is a movie that is just a best-of collection of the original movies, with worse versions of most of those scenes. It is also much more inspired by Blade Runner, so much so that ideas and scenes almost feel ripped from it. Haven't you seen Blade Runner? Good, if you are gonna watch this movie.
And their own ideas mostly just get in the way of their own movie as well as the good parts of the other movies that I have mentioned.
The movie is set in Hong Kong for no reason, which makes no sense in the Ghost in the Shell world. Characters are changed and/or weirdly acted in not so logical ways.
And they are not as interested in the story of Ghost in the Shell as they are in the aesthetics of it and other Sci-fi movies (Cyberpunk if you will). And this preoccupation with the looks mostly gets in the way of the actual original story, as well as their own, but also the core ideas behind it.
All in all, it just ends up being a jumbled mess. Watch the original three movies instead, Blade Runner and Ghost in the Shell 1 and 2.
And when it comes to stuff like this, people tend to bring up the rose-tinted glasses, but that was not the case in this movie, for me. I watched this movie twice, one time with a few years distance to when I last saw the original movies. Then I thought it was okay and thought the dislike for this movie was too harsh, I understood it, but I thought it was too harsh.
And then I went back and saw the original movies back to back and then waited a few days and saw this one again and it was much much much worse.
I had not remembered how much the movie was one for one remake, but how they still added stuff that was just there to be more. And how they lost track of and had misunderstood and was just too preoccupied with the looks. This view has softened a little bit, but it is still the core of what I think, and as such, this movie gets the below score from me:
5.5/10
