The 2011 Richard Gere THE DOUBLE is so unbelievably bad I can’t imagine how it was ever green lit and how Gere and Sheen agreed to be in it. I can’t think of one redeeming factor other than Richard Gere’s good looks and some of his acting. (It did often seem like he couldn’t believe he was stuck in such a bad movie too). There is no suspense since we find out early on who the bad guy is and the wooden character played by Topher Grace (embarrassingly like a schoolboy) has “the perfect” wife, sweet young daughter and a new baby always in her arms ... Heaven forbid she realizes he has a dangerous job working for the FBI. Perhaps she thinks he’s still finishing his thesis in the University Library? That might have made a more plausible plot. For so called top assassins, it’s interesting that they can’t seem to land a single bullet, run of half-cocked and car chase like detectives in a bad 70s cop series. Also, apparently, no one in this movie has ever heard of DNA or forensic testing of evidence left at a crime scene. I only watched it all the way through to see if it had any redeeming qualities... only to be further disappointed by the laudable ending. Don’t waste your time watching it. It truly is rubbish from start to finish. A “Charley’s Angels” plot would be more believable and engaging than this.
