Where do I begin?? A tearjerker that will rip your heart into pieces. The chemistry of the leading actors was off the charts. One day takes you through the lives of two 20 somethings over a course of 20 years. I love that the show was made of the most mundane little moments and that they didn’t show key moments in the characters’ lives but rather brought them to life through dialogues and supporting characters. You get to see pieces of their lives with and without each other. I watched the movie years ago and it was a tearjerker, but this series was something else. The dialogues, pacing, lighting, music, setting, fashion and hair- everything was era-appropriate. As someone who is not traditionally the most beautiful brown person (key word: traditionally), watching a gorgeous guy fall head over heels for a (gorgeous but not traditionally so) brown woman did wonders to my self-esteem and sense of belonging in a western world. The representation of a brown person without resorting to stereotypes about brown culture and an identity was refreshing.
My heart has been aching since I finished the show. If you want your heart broken too much, I would suggest stopping at episode 12 or 13. Episodes 10 and 14, in particular were brutal.
