So, like almost everyone who loves the Netflix show 'Queer Eye', I wait for every new season and binge watch it as soon as a new season is available. So, when I read that the charming Tan France was going to release his memoir, I HAD TO read it, because, I mean, TAN FRANCE!
I didn't go into the book with any preconceived notions or expectations. I just wanted to hear whatever he had to say. Just him chatting away in his gorgeous accent; I could listen to him all day. Actually, I was hoping to hear about how he met his husband, how his family reacted to the news of his coming out as a gay man, and how he deals with rumours of his friendship with Antoni. I got everything that I was looking for, and more.
He talks about what it was like to grow up as a Pakistani in South Yorkshire. There wasn't a moment when he 'realised' he was gay. Somehow, he just always knew. He found himself crushing over a boy, and he just knew, but he could never come out to his family and his community. Once he gets that out of the way, he goes on to talk about what interests him THE MOST-FASHION!
HE met his husband-to-be on a trip to Utah, and that's a really sweet love story. He spent many years working on his fashion business, where he met with moderate success. Jsut when he'd had enough of the stress and was on the verge of retiring, he got a call from the Netflix team for the 'Queer Eye'audition. He never thought he would make it, but aren't we so glad he did?
We do see snippets of his personality on the show, but here, he goes into deeper details about so many other things that are important to him, AND, there is an entire chapter about hair!
Tan comes across as a sweet and grounded man who candidly talks about how becoming famous suddenly is not all that's it made out to be. People envy that he gets to travel to so many different countries, but often, he doesnt't even get to leave the hotel, and after a couple days, he just misses the comfort of his own home, and just wants to be back with his husband.
You get to see fangirl Tan who talks with absolute glee about great it is to be recognised by and to hang out with celebrities. He's saucy, he's sassy, he throws a little shade, but that's just him being the queen that he is!
If you're expecting a racy, tell-all with juicy gossip, you're not going to find that here. He's a simple boy, who tells his story from his unique perspective. I love that he doesn't throw his sexuality in our faces. He talks bout his marriage and his husband with the respect they deserve. He is honest about a previous relationship where his partner told him that he had let himself go and how that impacted him so much, that he has never been less than fabulous after that.
In the end, his message is just about accepting yourself and others, and being true and grounded, and about the happiness that is to be found in just being yourself.
