Absolutely fantastic. I just want to gush about the MC, Mizu. She is such a well written character and the kind of complex female character that is so refreshing and needed in todays media. Sometimes when writers are tasked with strong female characters they make them 2D, over- powered characters with annoying personality tropes. Mizu does not fall victim to this. Mizu is so much more than a badass woman. In fact, I adore how all the women are portrayed in this series. They are all flawed, relatable, and strong in their own ways that doesn’t feel forced. And a great representation of female rage of course.
I also like how the “pretending to be man” trope was handled. Usually the trope overshadows the character and becomes all that’s focused on. For Mizu it is just one more interesting part of her character. Mizu’s gender seems almost fluid, at least the way it’s depicted seems so. Both her femininity and masculinity are explored during the course of the series. It’s easy to see why the lgbtq fans can relate to her and headcanon her as such. There is the question of does Mizu prefer to present as man bc that’s what she is on the inside or is it more so a way of surviving? Only using she/her pronouns almost doesn’t feel right. But I don’t thinking labeling her is necessary important. Whether or not Mizu is queer herself, she challenges gender norms and heteronormativity and that’s really cool. I’m interested to see where they go or don’t go with this part of her character.
I just really enjoy the androgynous representation. If this character would be confirmed as trans, bi, nonbinary, etc I would love it just as much. I could ramble on about this character more bc that’s how detailed she is.
Anyways, the refreshing gender rep is just a fraction of what makes this series so great. Everything was so gracefully and thoughtfully done. I am fully invested and if it’s not renewed for a second season I will cry.
