I'm a huge fan of Tom and Jerry, but that was just... yikes. Usually, we're given either Jerry's escapades trying to avoid Tom, or just the two fighting over something. In this one, Jerry is played off as a pure antagonist, effectively ruining the barbecue Tom's owner (I forget his name) made, and framing Tom for his own antics. Sure, one can argue that Jerry is seen as a sort-of antagonist in the show prior, but it can be justified by either Tom's actions or the setting of the episode, case in point "The Cat Concerto". In "High Steaks", however, everything Jerry does has no justified excuse, making him seem like a much more nasty character.
Speaking of harsh, Tom's owner is abominable. The way I see it, he was made to replicate Mammy Two-Shoes, Tom's former owner from the original series (with obvious reasons for being cut). She was rather harsh when giving Tom a whack with a broom, but this new owner ramps it up eleven notches with the cruelty. Like, geez: every scene with this guy shows him harming Tom in some way, shape, or form. I wholeheartedly understand why he only appeared for three episodes, but what I'll never understand is how someone managed to think of making someone this harsh to Tom...
Another thing about this episode is that it felt kind of boring to me. The original Tom and Jerry had a variety of jokes with each episode. With this one, these jokes were pretty forgettable (aside from the cruel slapstick with Tom and his owner).
All in all, this episode was not good, especially for Tom and Jerry standards. I always thought these Gene Deitch episodes were some sort of fever dream when they came on Boomerang when I was a kid, but looking back on it, I really wish I could've stuffed it back in the recesses of my mind...
