Do not believe the hype, this book is pretty poorly written, relying on the same call and response for every page.
Page 1 to page 153
Author: "hey reader, cannibalism is awful isn't?"
Reader: "yeah, truly disgusting"
A: "isn't it horrific how they have normalised it??"
R: "yeah honestly horrific"
It grows pretty old after the first scene and doesn't do much to change it up once established.
The main character is written in the same clunky style that male writers often write female characters, just a bizarre mess of womens gaze and half thought out discretions of how he's feeling.
The story doesn't build, the horrors don't progress, it just sort of meanders along with no real consolation to anything other than "this person is just as awful as I first stated" hell one major part of the plot is propelled forward by nothing more than "I know I shouldn't but I think I will"
And on a side note, the author keeps coming up with different ways of discribing words hanging in the air between characters but she does it slightly different each time and this would be fine if it wasn't done multiple times for several characters throughout the book!
