I thought I would like this remake. I was completely underwhelmed. The voices do not match the characters. It seemed like this movie removed a lot of the sass and soul and menace that the original voices exuded. The voice of Scar in this movie is missing its sinister quality. Beyonce as Nala just didnt quite connect. It really seemed like the voice actors were simply reading lines from a page.
My other qualm with this version is it removed several of the iconic lines and scenes the original is known for. They were either washed in political correctness or eliminated all together and that again removed some of the culture/flavor/ humor the original is known for. Ex: Rafiki does not say to Simba , "I know you! You're Mufasa's boy!" Instead he says. "You are the son of Mufasa!"...That was so DRY! And of course there had to be an inclusion of "girl power" that was just not necessary. It came off as a forced scene to accommodate what is happening in society and in doing so, it felt cheap.
The opening scene at Pride Rock with Simba's presentation by Rafiki was absolutely beautiful and amazing. Of course the updated graphics and such were good too. But other than that this movie definitely fell terribly flat. I loved the animated cartoon. I absolutely LOVED the stage play, but this live action movie should have never been made.
I hope film makers at Disney go back to writing and producing NEW movies and stop messing up the iconic ones. Every animated cartoon does not need a live action version and this was one of them.
