A visceral experience with strong visuals and acting. It spans conflicts from Japan to Germany to tell the story of how common trails unite us and humanizes us and hatred demonizes. There is also the sub-narrative of war as a machine of merciless exploitation with patriotism as a kind of sales pitch used to enslave the less fortunate. It’s not delivered perfectly but every scene never feels disjointed and paints a clear and evolving picture.

The move plot unfolds in outer-space and exploration but it’s really about ‘spaces’; about looking for something numinous when it’s been in front of you the entire time; love, family, etc. More specifically the spaces we can leave in the lives of those who love us and the spaces we create in our absence. I always take a very existential view of movies as I know there is always more to meets the eye. There always seems to be a meta-narrative behind a story’s complex characters and scenes. The theme of space exploration lends itself in the most interesting and unusual way. At the end I was satisfied I saw this film just as the protagonist was.
