Kind of silly overall, in the tradition of PG-13, homogenized, so calculated to not offend major studio massive projects, (forget about witty dialogue, get ready for a lot of pseudo-profundities, stand back for a double helping of PC), but it does have its virtues: impressive to look at, jolly rendition of dwarves, a tantalizing hint of how Sauron appears to others, and maybe a few other pleasant surprises. Does it have even a dash of Tolkien's moral themes, incredibly rich dialogue and expert pacing? No, but then again neither did the movies helmed By Peter Jackson, so there. In fact, I would argue in several important ways the movies were even worse than this lightweight offering; There was an entire huge novel to ignore in those efforts. Whereas here, there is just some tales in the appendix to riff off of, and doing so on a smaller TV screen in some ways feels very appropriate for these times and tastes
