Malcolm and Marie is honest and powerful look at the layers we need to remove in order to get at both the emotional and the factual truths about our selves and our relationships. I suspect that only those viewers capable fo doing that kind of work in their own lives will like this film.
In its broadest contours it calls to mind another powerful play/film of some half-century ago: Albee’s “”who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” In both films the writing and pacing have to be good enough to sustain interest in a plot with no murders, car chases, political machinations or looming public catastrophes. And in both cases, for this viewer, the script is a great success. Albeit Albee’s is definitely the better.
