I used to love this movie when I was younger and I recently re-watched it. Honestly, it is an excellent exploration of the generatational repercussions of suicide and mental illness on top of having one of the only female characters I've ever seen struggle with a learning disability.
It's well paced, so much happens but you never get bored. It's surprising on the first watch because you don't expect it to go the direction it does. The acting is excellent (hello Toni Collette?) and the character arcs are compelling.
In 2005 it was rare to see a story focused on women that was so complex and well characterized. Its kind of cheesy, but in a good way; the ending is heart-warming and sincere.
If it's in your wheelhouse, it's worth a watch. A romantic subplot, but the meat of the story is about healing alienated relationships within a family. It's rare I still enjoy a movie from the early 2000's without cringing but this seriously holds up.
