The series has the makings of something great, but strange direction choices, subpar scripting, and a lack of focus hold it back from reaching its full potential. Nonetheless, Cavill is wonderful as Geralt, fully embodying the Witcher’s pathos and struggle to simply get by within a world filled by petty humans that both despise our protagonist and wish him harm.
At its best, The Witcher evokes aspects of The Evil Dead franchise, mixing schlocky and ghoulish visuals with campy (and even slapstick-style) humor. At its worst, it’s content to settle for simple mediocrity on par with any of the countless knock-off fantasy attempts seen in the wake of Game of Throne’s initial success.
