Please note: This is a completely subjective review from someone that's obssessed with horror, and played in a group. This will have spoilers of the previous games.
Story;
100% one of the best, most immersive storylines - 2nd to Until Dawn; it did really well capturing the emotions of the characters.
Design;
The design was gorgeous - although some parts had no texture (mentioned in the Bugs category) - it looked super high-res and a friend walked in asking what movie we were watching.
Horror;
It was weak. I didn't find any of it scary, almost no aspects had me feeling that nervous. Admittedly i don't find many things scary, but Man of Medan, and Little Hope were FAR more nerve-wracking and tense. Perhaps because they had elements of mind-play involved; "am i gonna be shooting a friend or foe?" which made the decisions SO heavy to make, whereas here it lacked that fear and made it more of an 'obvious decision' playstyle focusing on QTE's - which did make it a lil more exciting to play.
Bugs;
Ran into some bugs at the start but i'm confident it was due to a sudden, further installment for the game we weren't aware about. At the start we saw Merwin, and then during the briefing his character disappeared. Voicelines were there (subtitled) but no voice - which admittedly made for some funny interactions. Restarted the game and Merwin reappeared on their flight to the sheohard's base. Also, the graphics were... questionable? Some parts looked really high quality and super realistic but other parts looked awful; Balathu's beard texture was tragic and the mountains looked super smoothed out with almost no texture. Not sure if this was purely due to that game update but it had still persisted to a more minor degree afterwards.
Group playability;
I mean, this is a game that's pretty much made for group play so it gets full marks on this of course, however there are some parts where it kinda looks weird and cuts the tension because you know there was meant to be a QTE for a character not being played. For example; Salim and Nick creeping around a feeding vampire, I was playing as Nick and there were so many Salim sections where it jutters a bit as it expects Salim to do a QTE (for Single-player) so it looked a bit strange.
As a group of three, it was a bit strange for characters; Player 1 gets to pick one other character so the three of us get to all have 2 characters. However one of their characters, Balathu, is only played for a teeny tiny section. Also try not to pick Jason and Nick together; you'll play between the two characters for a long while and then wait for a chance to play for even longer.
Conclusion;
4/5; a great storyline but not reallyt a horror game. As an individual game it was great, but compared to the previous titles it fell flat and was pretty disappointing.
