The show is neither accurate nor the typical experience of a Satmar woman in Williamsburg.
I am disappointed how negatively our community was portrayed by the producers of this show. The show was an exaggerated version of Deborah Feldmans book, while Deborah admits to having exaggerated in her book as well. (You can find Deborah talking about it on YouTube.)
The producers have combined stringencies that are not kept by the community, clothing that is way simpler than worn by the community, and given a false naivety to the people, who are very much aware of how the world and technology work today. They have painted us as an unforgiving, strict, and solemn community, when we are in fact a community full of kindness, joy, and pride ourselves in who we are.
As a Chassidish woman from Williamsburg I am outraged at how we were portrayed.
