This is a film allowing the viewer to understand the motivations of soldiers, the realities of war (without taking over the movie with it’s horrors), and the aftermath. The experience of a young Pentagon-lawyer-ladder-climber having to research the heroism of a long-rejected Vietnam soldier’s heroics, injects humanity into an ordinary guy who has never experienced war, even through close friends or family, nor empathized with veterans and their families because of that. His journey educates us all, through deep-hearted accounts by vets, a little soul-searching, and by the dismissiveness of others like him. A real gem of a movie with some time-worn and time-proven actors providing wonderful portrayals: and I’m not a fan of holding up American war heroes as flags.
