Background: I'm a long term Fallout fan. Played 3 when it first came out as my first Fallout game and got hooked, played every version and DLC from then on and went back and played the original 3 games as well. I watch hour long lore deep dive videos and explore the strategy guides for lesser known lore pieces. Fallout New Vegas is my favorite in the series followed by 3, 2, 1 and then 4 being my least favorite (and we don't talk about Fallout 76).
I was hyped for the show when it was announced and was genuinely excited to hear we were finally getting some non-game or book Fallout content. The first trailer dropped and I immediately started lowering my expectations accordingly, still hoping for at least a half decent show.
(MY POINT AT THE END OF THE REVIEW DOES NOT AFFECT MY REVIEW OR STAR RATING IN ANY CAPACITY)
Review:
Absolutely not a fan of this show. If I had to describe the show in one word it would be "mediocre", which pains me to say. It goes from being 4 stars for about 5 minutes to 2-1 stars for the next 20 and does this throughout the entirety of the show. Some of the dialog is absolutely AWFUL and even the fairly decent performances of the cast can't fix it. Some scenes come out of absolutely nowhere and have no bearing or connection to anything else going on. Some scenes genuinely feel as if they were written by AI with how they come out of nowhere and how inhuman the dialog feels.
Pointless nudity and sexual content that adds nothing to the story is just being done to draw in people that aren't pre-existing fans of the IP, which I don't appreciate.
There's a lot of pointless fan service dialog in the first couple episodes, talking about things from the games but never showing anything. This feels like phoning in the universe and just trying to pander to existing fans like myself, without actually doing anything to earn it other than saying those things existed. If they showed more of these things, it wouldn't be a problem, but it's almost exclusively done through dialog.
There are only 3 types of monsters in the entire first season, wasting tons of potential the universe and setting offers solely for the purpose of getting people hyped for season 2. We're teased at the very end of the season that season 2 will be showing the monster everybody actually wanted to see; the Deathclaw, by showing us a skull of the monster instead of the monster itself. There are so many moments that feel like they were going to introduce something the fans wanted to see, but instead all the fan service is done through dialog, which ranges from decent to some of the worst dialog I've ever heard in a show, which I suppose is also a form of fan service since Bethesda's writing gets worse each release.
The sets, environments, costumes and monster design are fantastic. However there is the exception of the Ghoul character (not the ferals) which looks absolutely awful, especially up close which happens often. All the things the show does right makes it all the more bittersweet because you see glimpses of how good the show could've been in these moments before the quality drops immediately after.
Overall, I'm not a fan, don't consider the show or any events within canon and won't be watching season 2.fallout show
Also Fallout New Vegas is no longer canon, Todd Howard confirmed this after fans pointed out retconning to important locations in New Vegas.
